Dolphins vs Seahawks game summary 9/4/00

A huge win to start the season. Seattle may not be the best team in the world but getting a shutout on opening day is huge. The defense looked like it was mid October. They kept Seattle to under 150 yards, and I mean total yards. They let only 71 yards rushing and about a similar amount of passing yards... The Dolphins had 6 takeaways and lost the ball only once. If you have a +5 turnover differntial (one of our keys to the game) and run the ball effectivly (don't want to brag but that was another key...) you will win in 99% of the games and it doesn't matter who or where you're playing. It was an all around good game. A much bigger test awaits next week in Minnesota. Miami has won the last 9 (!) openers and 10 of the last 11. Miami's September home record is by far the best in the league snce 1970, the Dolphins lost 4 home games in September since 1970 (That's shortly after the first moon landing...Nixon was in the begining of his first term...that's how much time it has been)

Grading the Dolphins

QB- Jay Fielder played very well, he wasn't asked to do very much because by halftime the Dolphins had a 23 point lead and the running game was working well. He threw his first TD and was 15 of 24 for 134 yards. He didn't throw an INT although one of his throws was intercepted but called back because of a penalty B

RB- Wow ! what a game by Lamar Smith. He had 27 rushes for 145 yards and a TD and he could have had 2 TDs but he fumbled at the Seattle 1 after a 36 yard run. The most important thing was that he had consistent runs 6,9,11,10,9,5 runs like that move the chains get the clock going and control the game. When was the last time a Dolphin back carried on 1st and 10 and got 8 or 9 yards ? After a 1st and 10 we usually had a 2nd and 12 the last few years A

WR- Just like the QB, the WRs weren't asked to do too much. Leslie Sheaperd was a pleasent surprise with 3 catches for 30 yards and Gadsden got his first TD of the year. B

OL- I'm still not sold on that unit but they played very well and opened the holes Smith needed to run through. Fielder took 2 sacks. Let's see them next week...A-

DL- QB Kitna/Huard were pressured and Miami got 4 sacks (2.5 for Armstrong, 1 less then in last year's Seahawks game...). They stopped the run, Seattle had just 71 yards rushing and half of that total came in one play, in short they were unrushable.A+

LB- Usuall solid game by the 3 LBs, we heard Rogers' name in the backfield making plays for a change, they were an important part in the shutout effort A

Secondary- How can you grade a unit that had 4 INTs (Madison-2, Marion and Surtain) ? It doesn't matter how bad those throws were, they are in mid season form, and they should be because WR Randy Moss and Cris Carter are waiting in Minnesota next week...A+

Special teams- Mare was solid as usuall going 3 for 3 with a long of 48 yards. Turk punting for the first time as a Dolphin had a 40+ average. The return game wasn't given much of a chance with all the turnovers...B+

Coaching- First game first win. That's good but I don't see Seattle as a good team this year, especially the way they played. A huge test is next week on the road.B+
