Dolphis vs Chargers Game Summary (12/19/99)
A very important win for Miami, they did not play very good and they got lucky at the end. On the up side, the defense played very well, Marino was solid, nobody expected Miami to run with Pritchett and the Charger defense. But with this kind of
play, even if they make the playoffs, a very early exit wouldn't be a surprise.
Grading the Dolphins
QB - A solid day for Marino. He went 22 of 36 for 241 yards no TDs or INTs. He did fumble once. He was red hot in the second quarter. He made the plays when they needed him to put Miami in FG position. That's the huge upside with Dan, when you need to get in FG range he hardly never makes a mistake. Dan had more than 150 yards by halftime.
On one of the 2nd half FG drives San Diego had Marino for a sack that would have moved the Dolphins out of FG range and he threw it away. People don't realize that without Marino (Huard for example) the team is out of FG position, usually nobody appreciates it. B

WR - A fine day for Martin and Gadsden (8 for 86, 4 for 83 respectivly). Gadsden had a huge 55 yarder. Goodwin lost a fumble. Green and OJ had one catch each. They did drop a few (Gadsden and Konrad) B-
RB - Well, I didn't expect them to run so they didn't surprise anyone. It's taff to run on those Chargers. Pritchett had a huge run on one of those 2nd half FG drives. Konrad is just playing bad on the second half of the season, I think it's time to seriously rethink his playing time and try to sign Pritchett for next year. D
OL - Marino was sacked a few times, but he also had time in other situations. When Dan has time he never ever misses, protection is that important. C-
DL - What can I say they were very good, in Harbaugh's face all day long. They had a few sacks, Owens - need I say more, You know I like him, he always ends up with a sack. Owens leads the team. Gardner was very good also. A
DE Rich Owens with the play of the day
LB - Zach was quiet, Jones was solid as usuall, Rogers was OK, they all did a fine job, just like the entire defense. B+
DB - That drive at the end made me have flashbacks of the Indy game. They held San Diego when they needed to. Harbaugh was 20 of 40 for 178 yards. B
Special teams - A fine day for Mare. He was 4 for 4. He is now tied for the NFL record for most FGs in a season with 37. Coverage was good also. Hutton continues to struggle. B+
Coaching - There were way too many penalties. They really hurt the team. Konrad looks out of it also. Bottom line, they won and only that counts. B-
